Welcome to Reception

Meet the team

What have we done this term to make us feel proud?

The children made us very proud of them on their visit to Sutton Park. Mr Bamber our Outdoor Education Leader made some fantastic simple maps for the children to use on the trip.  The children were able to spot features on the map and associate them with the landmarks around them.  It was great to see the children making links and being able to find where they were on the maps and follow simple route.

Sports day was enjoyed by all children on the school playground.  The children did so well, showing off the skills that they have been practising this term using a variety of different equipment.  It was great to see so many parents who were able to join us for the event and cheer their children on.

The children were very pleased to have their fortnightly Forest School session return this term.  Mrs South has planned some fantastic forest sessions for them.  The children were given hammers and nails and practised hammering nails into chunks of wood.  They delighted in using real tools and being trusted with the responsibility of using resources that they see adults using.  Mrs South is hopeful that the children will be able to use their new skills to craft something using the hammer and nails next session.

What we have been learning about this term

This half term our mini adventure has been “Explorers”.  The children have really engaged in this topic as we find out about what an explorer does and what they need.  We looked closely at the book “We’re going on a bear hunt” which the children have enjoyed learning off by half.  Some children have even been able to write their own versions of the story using all of the writing skills that we’ve been practising this term

It was wonderful to see the bear hunt story come to life at our Sutton Park trip when the children naturally made links to the story in what they could see around them.  “Look! There is real long wavy grass”.  The children got to “splash splosh” through a stream and see bog land and the forest.

In the classroom the children have had lots of opportunities to explore new vocabulary relating to explorers.  The children have been looking through real binoculars and finding out how to use a compass.  They have also enjoyed making their own survival shelters outside using the tarpaulin and pegs.

RML book change is every Thursday,  ditty sheets when children have read them. PE Monday and Forest School alternating classes on Tuesday afternoon. Book bags need to be in everyday.
